New Denver, BC

New Denver is a small community located on the eastern shore of Slocan Lake in British Columbias West Kootenay District, amongst  the Canadian Rocky Mountains. The area surrounding New Denver is a home to a number of small villages that enjoy beautiful summer weather, colourful autumn displays and glorious blankets of snow throughout the winter.
Founded in 1892 by silver miners, New Denver reached its economic peak in the early 20th century. By 1920, the mining boom was over, and logging became the main industry.
In recent years New Denver and the small mountain towns in the area have become a tourist destination for campers, hikers and nature seekers through the summer months, and nordic, backcountry and snowshoeing for the winter season.
New Denver is made up of a population of roughly 500 people. A recent demographic study indicated that the average age of 58 would rise to 64 in the next 10 years. This means that if New Denver is to survive, it will need to attract new people to the community while still providing support to its aging population. The current aging population, are looking for alternative living opportunities that will allow them a measure of freedom while reducing their expenses and responsibilities of traditional home ownership. This strategy also frees up housing real estate in the community for growing families and new residents.

The people, the community.

The demographics of the area confirm that the majority of the valleys population are living on limited income, in homes built before the 1980s, and in many cases seniors living alone.

Many people that would like to live in the area are thwarted by a lack of real estate inventory as seasonal occupancy has removed much of the year-round housing from the village and surrounding area.

The NDAHS are devoted to developing  housing for the underserved members of the community:
  • elderly singles and couples
  • low income families
  • our indigenous community members
  • accessible needs individuals and families
  • at risk youth and adults
  • recent emigrant individuals and families
Currently, there are no options available besides the standard single family home. By incorporating a clustered apartment option, many of these valuable community members will be able to continue calling New Denver home.
